Get Britain Working: The path to an 80% employment rate

The UK Government’s ‘Get Britain Working’ White Paper aims to chart a path toward an 80% employment rate, taking up a Learning and Work Institute (L&W) recommendation dating back to 2022.  

Doing so would match world-leading countries like the Netherlands and would boost the economy by more than £20 billion while saving the taxpayer £8 billion per year. 

This briefing note sets out five things you need to know about the Government’s plan, why it matters, and how success can be achieved. L&W calls for actions to: 

  • Get better help to more people 
  • Implement a Youth Guarantee 
  • Ensure employers open up their recruitment processes and
  • Ensure employers focus on healthy workplaces
