The British Army has a broad education and training offer for soldiers and officers, including literacy, numeracy and digital skills. As one of the largest apprenticeship employer-providers in the UK, the Army delivers apprenticeships across a range of trades, including construction, logistics and business administration. Through the Army Higher Education Pathway, officers have the opportunity to achieve a degree.
Learning and Work Institute – and its predecessor organisations the Basic Skills Agency and NIACE – has worked with the British Army since 2001. We undertake research, evaluation and policy work to inform the development of their education and training offer to service personnel. Our work includes an evaluation of the Army’s apprenticeship programme and an Armed Forces basic skills longitudinal study.
