Nearly one in three adults across OECD economies has low foundational skills in literacy or numeracy. The OECD’s Navigating Life with Low Literacy and Numeracy report shows that this is not only an education issue, but a major challenge for employment, health, confidence, civic participation and social justice.
This will be a timely discussion on what these findings mean for Wales. We will explore why adults with the greatest need are often the least likely to access learning, and how trusted relationships through employers, trade unions, community organisations, health services and social services can help reach people who may not come forward on their own.
The event will consider the different profiles of low skills identified in the report and consider the implications for adult learning provision in Wales.
This session will be of interest to policymakers, adult learning providers, employers, community organisations, trade unions, researchers and anyone committed to strengthening foundational skills in Wales.
We’ll be joined by a panel of speakers and the report’s author, Anja Meierkord from OECD.
