L&W has been working with Ipsos and other partners to support the Government in understanding what works in increasing adults’ numeracy skills, as part of Multiply, the Government’s flagship programme for improving adult numeracy between 2022 and 2025. L&W was involved in designing and conducting Randomised Control Trials to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions which aimed to improve adult numeracy.
These reports present findings from the trials. They sought to produce high-quality evidence on the impact of specific interventions in engaging adults with numeracy and inform policymakers and researchers about the opportunities and challenges of implementing trials in the adult education sector.
L&W led the Encouraging progression: adult numeracy randomised controlled trial. This found that older learners who had previously taken part in a basic numeracy course were more likely to start a Maths qualification when they were sent a letter encouraging them to sign up for a further course.
