100 years of learning and work
2021 marks the centenary of the founding of the British Institute of Adult Education, one of L&W’s predecessor organisations.
The British Institute of Adult Education was founded in 1921. Over the next century, we played a leading role in lifelong learning. Today, as Learning and Work Institute, we work with a range of organisations to promote and support lifelong learning and social inclusion.
As we mark our centenary, this event celebrated the impact of lifelong learning and look ahead to the future. We heard from people who have transformed their lives through learning, including Festival of Learning award winners. There will also be a debate with an expert panel the importance of lifelong learning, the current state of play, and what the next century might look like for learning and work opportunities.
This event was live streamed from City Lit College, where we hosted a small group of our key stakeholders, award winners and partners.

We are an independent policy, research and development organisation dedicated to lifelong learning, full employment and inclusion. We research what works, influence policy, develop new ways of thinking, and help implement new approaches.
Festival of Learning is the biggest celebration of lifelong learning in England, showcasing the remarkable achievements of adults who have used learning to transform their lives, and highlighting how lifelong learning benefits society and the economy
